Hello! + Comics Workshop

Filed under: art, awesomeness, diy, fanfiction, graphic novels, manga, Uncategorized — ccchauffe @ 6:49 pm

Hello! My name is Chase Chauffe, and I’m the new Teen programming person at the Paradis Library. I’ve got plans and ideas for programs that will hopefully BLOW YOUR MIND, and keep you coming back for more. A little bit about myself:

~ I’m from Bayou Gauche, and went to Hahnville (Class of 2005), but I am originally from southeastern Colorado. My family moved a lot when I was young, so I’ve lived in a couple different places, but my family settled down in St. Charles Parish when I was going into 6th grade.

~ I am a huge NERD when it comes to music, movies, comics and videogames. I love talking about this stuff so please, talk to me about the media you enjoy or geek-out over.

~ I am such a nerd, that I went to college to get a degree in Sequential Art, which is a fancy way to say “comics.” Speaking of which…

The first big program I have planned is a Comics Workshop. It’ll start tomorrow, August 31st, and continue for every Wednesday in September. I’ll teach you guys how to draw anything you want: characters, backgrounds, props, panels, sound effects, etc. Everyone will learn how to draw their own comic book: ideally, you can show up each Wednesday to work on your book, then at the end of the month, no matter how much progress you’ve made, I’ll teach you how to assemble your pages into a book using the photocopier.

I thought I would share some comic pages I did a long time ago with you guys, just to show you how I draw and to hopefully get you excited about making your own comics!

.

Hope you guys like my comics, and I hope you’re excited about drawing your own! I hope to see you at Paradis on Wednesdays, starting at 3 PM!

Totemo Kuru!!! (So Cool!)

Hey it’s Tayls again! =D

For those who don’t know, I am a HUGE, extra-gooberific fan of *Hayao Miyazaki’s art, films, words, you name it! I have been aware for a while that He–and I must capitalize His pronouns because He is so godlike–has been working on a *Studio Ghibli remake of  The Borrowers. Now, for those of you who remember The Borrowers, you may be skeptical of a remake. But I assure you that your doubts are unneeded because He will do the story great justice. With His flawless animation, beautifully complex artwork, and AMAZING directing, this movie is one to look out for. The US is due for an English dubb release some time soon and a new UK trailer has already been released!

 Arrietty

Also! Hayao Miyazaki and his son, Goro are collaborating on yet ANOTHER new film for Studio Ghibli that has, until now, been virtually unheard of. (And I am an avid follower of all his work.) It’s a film adaption of a 1980 2-volume manga by Tetsuro Sayama, and the official English title is From Up on Poppy Hill. I am SUPER excited as it will be following the format of one of my personal faves by Miyazaki, Whisper of the Heart. (It’s sort of a realistic drama, with a sprinkle of hinted-at romance and a heaping pile of well-paced mystery.)

*Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan’s greatest animation directors. Co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 with Isao Takahata. Now Walt Disney Company has international rights for all films produced and released by Studio Ghibli. Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Ponyo are the newest movies released in the US.
