Recycled Fashion Workshop

Filed under: crafts, diy, events, summer reading — Tags: , — SCPL Teens @ 4:45 pm

Recycling maven extraordinaire, Kerry Fitts, led us in a recycled fashion workshop this past Friday at East Regional Library. Just google her and you’ll find out a billion cool things about her art and thrifting talents. The teens who participated were a blast to work with. We had so much fun cutting up thrift store t-shirts and creating entirely new pieces of clothing with them. It was great to have a couple guys join us! The two cousins created intricate appliqué designs of skulls and flames which were a challenge to sew and turned out so cool. One of the girls created a pretty yellow and white wrap shirt made of a kind of slinky feeling fabric. Another took a pale blue-green t-shirt with an unattractive logo on it, turned it inside out, and with some clever cuts and sewing on a ruffled strip of aqua trim with silver embroidery, created something completely gorgeous. Then there was the “chicken time” outfit– a cute dress created from a purple t-shirt, some grey knit fabric, and a chicken head cut from another shirt. Perfect for doing the “chicken time” dance. Thanks my dear, for making that song stick in my head to this day.

Comic Book Workshop

Filed under: events, summer reading — Tags: — SCPL Teens @ 6:47 pm

The comic making workshop we had on Tuesday at East Regional and St. Rose were great. Rob Guillory was incredibly friendly and generous with his knowledge and time with the teens. He started by letting everyone thumb through his original drawings and sketches while he told us a little about the comic industry… very informative for future comic makers. He demonstrated how you can manipulate the drawings in Photoshop to color and change them. Then he showed us his drawing process and lead some drawing exercises. We are now his newest biggest fans.
If you missed the workshop, don’t despair. We really want to ask him back again!

Summer Reading Fun!

Filed under: events, summer reading — Tags: , — SCPL Teens @ 6:56 pm

So far the Teen Summer Reading programs is humming along nicely.

Having a movie license is giving us so much more flexibility with programming… or at least giving us more options. So this summer there will be several movies showing at the branches.
June 18: Hoot PG @ West Regional Library @ 2 pm
June 19: The Water Horse PG @ Hahnville Branch @ 10:30 am
June 20: Bridge to Terabithia PG @ Norco Branch @ 2 pm
June 27: I am Legend PG-13 @ St. Rose Branch @ 2 pm

Coming up in July are A Bug’s Life, The Golden Compass, Zathura, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.

Notice anything about these titles? They all come from books… so we are promoting literacy while providing a fun way to beat the heat this summer.

Plus we are now the proud owners of a brand new Red Bar Style “Roosevelt” 8 Ounce Antique Popcorn Machine. It’s not an antique though… it’s brand new. And it will be delivering movie theater quality popcorn any moment now. We are test driving it today during a Wii program at West Regional.
